Abstract

In the separation of solid materials of different density, as in the cleaning of coal, by stratification under the action of pneumatic pressure, the materials are first divided into a number of size ranges, each of which is then subjected to the pneumatic separating operation, and the less dense constituent from the small size range or ranges is fed to the separator plant appropriate to the higher size range or ranges. The invention has special application to the process described in Specification 274,587, [Class 117], by providing on the separator for the higher size ranges a sufficient quantity of small particles of clean material for close bedding. The pneumatic separators may be constructed as described in Specification 297,757, [Class 117], those designed for the small size ranges having appropriately small dimensions. Dust may be screened or otherwise removed either from the whole of the materials at the beginning of the operation or from the small size ranges only either before or after their treatment on the pneumatic separators. The dust may be subjected to froth-flotation or other appropriate cleaning operation.
