Abstract

333,622. Holmes, C. W. H., and Birtley Iron Co., Ltd. May 17, 1929. Pneumatic separating. - In the pneumatic separation of materials, such as a mixture of coal and shale, according to density by subjecting them to the action of an upward pressure of air on a jigging air-pervious table whereby they are stratified and the constituents of the different layers are subsequently discharged from the table at different points, the materials are first graded according to size and the different grades are fed to different parts of the table. As applied to the duplex type of separating apparatus described in Specifications 321,670 and 332,291, the feeding and grading device consists of a triangular imperforate plate 4 disposed in the space between the arms 1 of the separating table and inclined upwardly in the forward direction. The materials are fed to the base of the triangle and travel towards the apex, being discharged over the edges 5 in grades of increasing size. In order to assist the action and hasten the discharge of the smaller sized grades, riffles, gutters, &c. 6 may be provided. A wall 7 at the feed end of the plate 4 prevents the premature delivery of the materials to the separating table.
