[Class 117] In apparatus for separating dirt from coal and other analogous uses of the type in which the material is fed along a trough with an air-pervious bottom and is subjected to an upward current of air whereby the materials stratify according to density, and slots are provided at intervals along the bottom of the trough for the discharge of the lower stratum, the end of the part of the trough bottom a, on the feed side of the slot l is higher than and out of alinement with the end of the trough bottom e on the discharge side of the slot, and the latter is adapted to cause the bottom layer of material to move against the flow of the main mass of material into the slot. As shown, the part e is sloped backwards in the direction of the feed end of the trough. In a modification, the part e is substantially horizontal and reciprocates on supports d oppositely inclined to the supports of the part a. Preferably the end of the trough a overhangs the slot l and the discharge passage h is formed to provide an air seal. The forward part of the trough has a cut-out flap p, and discharge passage m for middlings and an adjustable weir q for the top stratum of material. A skimming device may be arranged over the first discharge slot.
