Abstract

431,801. Separating solid materials. PRINS, K., 1106, East Poplar Street, West Frankfort, Illinois, U.S.A. March 20, 1934, No. 8793. [Class 117] In the separation of refuse from comparatively large sized coal, a flowing stream of small coal is formed in a trough 10 which has a series of baffles 26 by which upward surges in the stream are produced, and the material to be separated is fed on to the top of the stream, the coal floating on the upper surface and being skimmed off at intervals while the refuse sinks and is carried away by the stream, from which it is ultimately screened. In the apparatus described the trough is mounted on rearwardly inclined links 15 and reciprocated by a crank and connecting rod to impart a forward travelling movement to the stream which is supplied by a hopper 27 and feed plate 30. The baffles 26, which have an overhanging lip 261, are formed at the rear side of a series of compartments formed by trays 12, the bottom of which is partly inclined at x and partly horizontal at y. A step 32 is provided at the base of each baffle 26 to assist in the agitation of the stream. The material under treatment is fed from a hopper 61 and feed plate 63 on to the stream of small coal, which acts as a flotation medium for the large coal and allows refuse to sink. Above each tray is disposed, adjustably longitudinally and vertically, a skimming device S', S<2>, S<3>. Each skimmer consists of a plate 65 with a shallow vertical rear end wall and forwardly inclined undersurface. Above the skimmers are deflectors 72 which guide the separated coal into lateral longitudinal channels for delivery to a shoot 78 and conveyer 79. The base of the deflectors is formed with small apertures to allow the return to the main stream of any of the flotation medium that may have been skimmed off with the large coal. At the forward end of the trough, the small coal charged with refuse passes over a grid 33 which retains the refuse and delivers it to a shoot 36, while the small coal passes by way of the shoot 34, conveyer 35 and elevator 43 back to the hopper 27.
