Abstract

451,402. Washing granular materials. MEUNIER, F. J., 3, Villa Blaise Pascal, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. Nov. 29, 1935, No. 33116. [Class 82 (ii)] Apparatus for the purification of coal &c. by the gravity concentration process includes one or more transverse partitions which may be movable and means for collecting separately the fractions which sink in the compartments formed by the partition or partitions, the collecting means comprising a single conveyer arranged at the bottom of the vessel below the partition or partitions and co-operating with discharge openings, each of which is positioned so that it removes the material which sinks in one of the compartments. Coal &c, is fed into heavy liquid in the vessel 1 by means of a hopper 9 with a feeding plate 11 worked by an eccentric 12. The coal 8 c. is directed along the vessel by a deflecting baffle 13 and the light material which floats is carried by a scraper conveyer 14 to a discharging bucket elevator 15 which dips into a quiescent zone of liquid in the vessel bounded by a grating 16. Near the bottom of the vessel one or more transverse partitions 21 tapering towards the upper edge are provided. The position of the partition 21 is adjustable by means of a hand wheel 26 on a threaded rod 25 passing through the partition. Below the partition is a screw conveyer 18 which co-operates with discharge openings 20, 19, the fraction sinking on the near side of the partition being discharged through the opening 20 and that sinking on the far side through the opening 19. The opening 20 preferably has an adjustable cross-section so that adjustments may be made to correspond with different positions of the partition. The openings lead by means of screw conveyers to the boots of elevators 23. The elevators 23 and the elevator 15 discharge the products on to screens 34 on which thev are rinsed and the liquid recovered and reconcentrated. Liquid is withdrawn from the quiescent zone bounded by the grating 16 and forced by a pump 28 into a transverse pipe 27 and longitudinal pipes 29, the pipes 27 and 29 having openings which produce horizontal and obliquely directed jets of liquid from the pipe 27 and upwardly and obliquely directed jets from the pipes 29. To prevent decrease in the density of the liquid owing to moisture carried in by the coal &c., liquid of greater density than that in the vessel is supplied from a tank 2 through a pipe 3 having a valve 4 controlled by a densimetric device 5.
