Abstract

<PICT:0605728/III/1> In distillation apparatus, particularly for use with sea or river water, the density of the brine discharge is controlled and scale formamation is reduced by an evaporator having a vapour separating chamber b with a liquid sump, the feed valve i of which is controlled by float g in chamber f, the upper part of which is connected to the upstream side of flow meter c in the vapour outlet a while the lower part is connected to the sump; and the discharge valve i1 is controlled by float g1 in chamber f1 the upper part of which is connected to the downstream side of the flow meter, while the lower part is connected to water balance pipe n which forms a U tube with chamber f1 and is connected at its upper end to the upstream side of the flow meter. Fresh water inlet o and overflow p ensure that the balance pipe is always maintained full. This apparatus maintains the normal liquid level in its evaporator substantially constant, and keeps a constant ratio between the vapour flow and liquid discharge; the overall result being that the ratio of feed to discharge remains constant for varying outputs of vapour. If desired, the float operation can be replaced by spring-loaded bellows or diaphragms. In a modification, which can be used when the pressure varies considerably from atmospheric, the water balance pipe is led into chamber b and extends above the liquid level in the sump. The apparatus is suitable for use with the forced circulation evaporator described in Specification 538,999.
