Abstract
945,051. Valves. R. BRIGGS, and G. KNOWLES. July 4, 1960 [May 4, 1959], No. 15118/59. Heading F2V. The level of liquid, e.g. mercury, in a tank 1 is maintained constant by a pinch cock constituted by a tube 4 of, e.g. silicon rubber, connecting the tank with a reservoir 10 and passing through slots 7 in a tube 6 where it is arranged to be closed by pressure between an adjustable knife edge 8 and an anvil 11 carried by a float 2 in the tank 1. Alternatively, the anvil and knife edge may be interchanged, or the knife edge may be dispensed with and the tube pinched between the anvil and the upper edges of the slots 7 or between the anvil and a plug in the tube 6. Also the anvil stem may be pinned to or rest upon a lever pivoted to the wall of the tank 1 and carrying the float. An angled inlet 13 to the tank prevents errors due to splash. The knife edge 8 may be positioned by a servo mechanism responsive to the action or process governed by the discharge from the tank 1 through the outlet 5.
