876,975. Sampling liquids. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 19, 1960 [Feb. 16, 1959], No. 5280/59. Class 106(5) A device for taking samples from a stream of liquid over a period of time comprises a sampling tube 1 connected by a pipe 4 to a sampling bottle 2 sealed by an elastomer cap 6 and a second pipe connection 5 from the bottle to means for applying a steadilyi ncreasing partial vacuum to the tube the pipes 4, 5 having pointed ends to penetrate the cap 6. The pipe 5 leads from the bottle through a valve 11 to a reservoir 3 which has an outlet 9 connected to a high vacuum pump and a valved inlet 8 which is connected with a metered water supply and has an air inlet 12. In operation, the water level in the reservoir, is initially below the inlet 8, the base of the tube 1 is immersed in the stream of liquid to be sampled and the vacuum pump started with the valve 11 closed and inlet 8 open to admit air from the vent 12. The pump is then adjusted so that pressure in the reservoir is at atmospheric and the valve 11 is opened and water fed through the inlet 8 at a steady rate so that with the pump operating at its adjusted rate a slow stream of air is admitted through the inlet 8 and up through the water in the reservoir. By maintaining constant the water feed and vacuum pump rate, there is a steady increase in the partial vacuum in the reservoir and hence a steady lift in the tube 1. The rate of sampling can be varied by adjusting the water feed rate, and a number of sampling bottles 2 and tubes 1 may be connected to the reservoir 3 via a manifold.
