Abstract

770,706. Filling tanks. BEUL, M. L. Feb. 1, 1955 [Feb. 2, 1954], No. 2930/55. Class 21 [Also in Group XXIX] A liquid supply mechanism of the type that automatically closes when the receiving vessel is filled, comprises a spring actuated valve 3, Fig. 1, for normally preventing flow, means 14 for opening the valve 3, an air chamber 18 closed by a diaphragm 17 linked with the valve 3, a main tube 23 linking the air chamber 18 with the outside air at a point 24 near the outlet of the device, and a branch tube 23 extending in the direction of liquid flow, the branch tube being surrounded by a sleeve 32 that can be displaced against a spring 34 by the liquid flow to increase the cross sectional area of the flow path. A handle 14, enables a lever 8 to be rotated about a pivot 9 and open the valve 3 against a spring 5. In operation, the vacuum created in the tube 21 by the flow of liquid draws air through the orifice 24 until this orifice is covered by the liquid in the tank being filled. The vacuum in the tube 21 then raises the diaphragm 18, and cam 16 on the diaphragm permits the pivot 9 to move to the left in a slot (not shown). The spring 5 then closes the valve 3. To prevent liquid entering the orifice 24, a float valve 28 may be arranged as in Fig. 5 to close the opening 29 when liquid enters the opening 27. One or more abutments 25 are used to accurately position the device with respect to the tank 30 to be filled.
