Abstract

779,155. Valves. ZWICKY, Ltd. May 3, 1955 [May 4, 1954], No. 12970/54. Class 135. A nozzle for filling the fuel tanks of cars and aircraft and of the kind in which the fuel supply is automatically cut off when the level in the tank reaches a predetermined value comprises an L- shaped tubular member, the leg 2 of which carries an adjustable collar 3 for setting the level to which the tank is to be filled and the flow through which is controlled by spring loaded main and pilot valves 6, 14 respectively which are held in the open position by a latch 34 which is released by mechanism operated by a float 42 in the leg. The pilot valve which opens a little before the main valve, has a stem 15 extending through the main valve and formed with a groove 16 to permit flow of fuel from the inlet to the outlet side of the main valve when the pilot valve is opened by a rod 27 connected by a link to a crank 28 mounted on a shaft 29 extending at one end through the nozzle wall and carrying an operating lever 31. The shaft 29 also carries an arm 32 which holds the valves in open position by engagement with the latch 34 which is mounted on a shaft 35 carrying an arm 36 pivoted to the upper end of a rod 37 having a tubular extension 39. When the tank has been filled to the required level, the float 42 abuts the tube 39 and releases the latch from the arm 32, thus permitting the valves to close under the action of the spring 13. The latch may be released at any time to enable the valves to close by means of a rod 45 having a spring- loaded press-button 44.
