Abstract

513,269. Mixing liquids and gases. WALLACE & TIERNAN, Ltd., and WILMSLOW, V. A. March 23, 1938, No. 8969. [Class 86] [Also in Group I] In apparatus for adding chlorine &c. in measured quantities to a stream of liquid, of the kind described in Specification 193,032, [Class 86], in which chlorine is supplied to a bell jar sealed with water and is aspirated, together with water, from the jar by the main stream, means are provided for causing a gas pressure measuring-device to indicate any failure in the gas supply. A liquid seal valve may be provided or a float, which, on the failure of the supply, operates indicating means such as a warning, or effects the replacement of the exhausted gas cylinder by a fresh one through a relay, as shown, the gas pressure is measured on a gauge to which atmospheric pressure is admitted on the failure of the gas supply. Gas is admitted to the bell jar 2, Fig. 2, by a pipe 9 fitted with a valve 11 controlled by a float 12. The jar is sealed by water supplied by a float-controlled valve 4 to a trough 1 fitted with an overflow. Gas and water are aspirated by a tube 6 within a tube 7 having an orifice 8 at the top and open to the water at the bottom ; the height of the tube 6 can be varied to vary the pressure at the top of the tube 7, and thus the supply of gas. A tube 16 passes to the top of the tube 7 and is connected to a tube 20, Fig. 3, entering a chamber 22 in which is a baffle 23. The chamber is connected by a tube 21 to the pressure gauge, and is fitted with a tube 24 which depends into a tube 26 open to the atn osphere by a vent 27 and sealed by water contained in a closed vessel 25 connected by a tube 28 with a tube 17 projecting into the bell jar. On the failure of the gas supply the pressure within the bell jar falls causing the water outside the tube 26 to rise and break the sea within the tube 25, thus admitting atmospheric pressure to the gauge; to prevent the water filling the jar, air is admitted after a limited drop in pressure through a tube 14 the end of which lies in an inverted rubber bulb 13.
