Abstract
634,993. Softening and purifying water. PICCARDO, C. Jan. 1, 1947, No. 55. Convention date, April 7, 1941. [Class 46] [Also in Group XXIX] In a method of softening boiler feed water the water together with a liquid containing precipitating agent, a heating fluid and a part of the softened water still containing precipitated particles in suspension, is fed at the bottom part of a circular receptacle, some of the fluids being fed tangentially, and the softened water is removed at the top of the receptacle. In the arrangement shown water is supplied to a vessel a through pipe 1, diaphragm valve 2, calibrated passage 3, and pipe 4. Some water is branched off through pipe 6 to fill a container b provided with reagent. Water is also supplied to the container through a pipe 8 at a rate depending upon the quantity of water flowing through the passage 3. The water containing reagent overflows through pipe 10 to the bottom of the vessel a. Steam is supplied to the vessel by way of pipe 11, diaphragm valve 12, pipe 13 and a jet pump 14. Return boiler water is supplied to the bottom of the vessel through pipe 20 and condensate is supplied through pipe 21. ' The pipes 13, 20, 21 are fitted with jet pumps whereby softened water from the top of the vessel a is returned to the bottom by pipes 19. The fluids are fed tangentially to the bottom of the vessel a. Softened water containing particles in suspension flows out through pipe 22 to a separator c from which clear water flows to a tank d containing a float 23. The separator is of the kind described in Specification 305,977, [Class 46]. By means of the float 23 and a three-way trip valve 24, the supply of fluids to the vessel a is controlled (see Group XXIX).
