Abstract

204,353. M³ller Ges., F., and Ostertag, J. April 27, 1922. Purifying liquids; separating by gravity.-Boiler feed-water or other liquid is purified by heating with agitation, so as to cause the particles of precipitate to concentrate and ascend or sink, and passing away the liquid so treated laterally between approximately parallel surfaces arranged so as to form oblique passages, whereby the ascending and descending impurities cannot mix with the purified liquid. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises a treating vessel 1 provided with a conical partition 8 having a central opening 9 and a vent pipe 9*. Crude-water is admitted through a pipe 2 with float-operated valve 3. Hot water containing sludge is delivered from boilers 10 through pipes 6, and soda or other reagent is supplied from a reservoir 4. The purified water passes away from below the partition 8 through a pipe 7. With the apparatus constructed as shown in Fig. 2 the crude water, and reagent are all supplied to the bottom of the vessel 1, the purified water separates from the ascending and descending impurities as it turns laterally between the conical surfaces 11, 12 towards the outlet pipe 7. It is stated that excess carbonate of soda passing with the purified water to the boiler is returned with the hot waterto the vessel 1 as caustic soda.
