Abstract

Liquids, purifying; decanting and settling; filters, cleansing.-An apparatus for purifying feed-water and separating oil therefrom comprises a decanting- chamber into which the liquid is admitted and uniformly distributed near the bottom, and from which the water escapes over a submerged weir to the bottom of a filtering-chamber. The liquid, such as condenser water, entering the decanting- chamber 1 by a pipe 9 is distributed by a perforated plate 10 to allow the oil to rise. The water passes over a weir 5 to the outlet 7 leading to the bottom of the filtering-chamber 2, in which is located a removable filter block 12 of known type. The discharge chamber 3 contains a float which governs the pump supplying the boiler. An indicator chamber 16 for showing the condition of the filter receives liquid through a passage 15 when the level in the chamber 1 rises owing to the fouling of the filter. A float 18 then rises, moving a pointer 17. The overflow 21 may be employed as the indicator, the float and pointer being dispensed with. After cleansing the filter, the chamber 16 is emptied through a cock 22.
