Class 86 [Also in Group XVIII] In an apparatus for treating industrial liquid (e.g. boiler feed water flowing in a pipe 1) by distributing therein a metered quantity of solid treating product (water softener briquettes B) the liquid to be treated, or a part thereof, flows down the inclined plane bottom 9 of a container 4, of the solid, and in contact with the solid. Saturation of the liquid by the solid is thereby avoided whilst correct proportioning of the solid dissolved and the liquid flowing over the bottom 9, is maintained. As shown, boiler feed water is supplied intermittently through a pipe 1 to a locomotive boiler 2, when steam injector 12, supplied with steam through a pipe 13, is actuated. A branch pipe 3 is connected through a regulator cock 14 to the upper end of the inclined container 4. The water passes into an upper end compartment 6, through perforated partition 5 of a central compartment for the briquettes B, to a lower end compartment 7 connected by a pipe 8 to the pipe 1 at the input side to the injector 12. Excess water is bypassed from the cock 14, by a pipe 16, to the pipe 8. The container 4, in some applications, may discharge directly into the point of utilization of the treated liquid and in the apparatus shown may be divided into two separate units by partitions as described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown).
