[Also in Groups II and XVIII] A device for treating a liquid with a solid material by passing the liquid through a solid in a container, for insertion in a pipeline, comprises three chambers connected in series, the inlet to and outlet from the device being in line and opening into the first and third chambers respectively, the middle chamber consisting of two separable end parts adapted jointly to contain the solid material and being inclined obliquely to the line of the inlet and outlet, and the first and third chambers having valves by which they can be isolated from the middle chamber. The device is particularly applicable to the treatment of water in order to prevent corrosion and the formation of scale, for example in water pipes and water heaters, by contacting the water with condensed phosphates such as tetrasodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate or sodium hexametaphosphate with or without silicates. In Figs. 1 and 2, the device comprises inlet chamber 1, middle chamber 2 and outlet chamber 3, valves 7 and 20 being adapted to close openings 5, 18, into the middle chamber. Lower part 12, upper part 13 and glass tube 14 together form the middle chamber, the lower and upper parts being joined by screws 15. Screens 23, 24 ensure that the solid material remains in the middle chamber, while an orifice in the wall of the middle chamber, closed by screwed plate 26, permits replenishment of the solid material.
