Abstract

Sewage from domestic sources enters a first aeration chamber and passes through an aperture 18 in the partition 15 to the other aeration chamber. From the aeration chamber the liquid passes through an aperture 25 in partition 20 to settling chamber 24. A further safety aperture is provided as is a baffle 29 which minimizes scum flow. Liquid is discharged by outlet pipe 28. A timing mechanism closes by valve 35 the air supply to pipes 38a and 38b and aerators 40 and supplies it to pipe 39. This causes the liquid in settling chamber to be mainly returned to the first aerating chamber. At the same time the liquid level in the settling chamber drops to below the lower level of the discharge pipe 28. <PICT:1124721/C1/1> <PICT:1124721/C1/2> In Fig. 4 (not shown), the chamber is made of prefabricated synthetic polymeric material.
