[Class 69 (iii)] [Also in Group I] Relates to apparatus for injecting liquid fertilizers and the like into the soil and to crop spraying devices. According to the invention, such a device comprises a shaft 1 carrying an infection needle 3 at its lower end and provided with a handle 6 and having a reciprocating force pump 10 attached with feed and delivery connections for supplying measured quantities of liquid to the needle. The device may also be used as a spray by attaching a pressure container to the shaft and coupling the container to the pump and to a sprayer nozzle. The detachable screw-threaded hollow needle 3 is tapered with openings 4 near the detachable ogival tip 5, made of hard metal. A cross-bar 7 is provided for forcing the needle into the ground. The combined suction and delivery pump 10 has its piston-rod 31 guided by grooved rollers 38 (Fig. 6) mounted on spindles 40, supported by a sleeve 41 screwed or welded on the pump body. The spindles having rings 43 at one end are secured by a common pin 42. The cylinder of the piston communicates with a flexible suction tube 11 through a suction and delivery valve situated in a hollow piece 15. The suction tube is fitted at its free end with a strainer 12, which is placed in the liquid receptacle. On operating the pump, liquid rises into the hollow piece 15 through the suction valve and leaves it through the delivery valve. A plug 24 closing the piece 15 is maintained in position by a strap 26. When the delivery valve is opened, the liquid escapes through a delivery tube to a flexible pipe 13 leading to a rigid tube 14, communicating with the lower part 2 of the hollow shaft, and hence with the needle. The unit containing the suction and delivery valves is screwed to the end of the pump body. To convert the apparatus into a sprayer the needle 3 is removed and replaced by a connecting piece having a ring to fit the end 2 of the shaft 1. Inside this ring an annular recess communicates with a horizontal tube. This tube branches to communicate with a tank 60 held on the handle 6 by a hook 68, welded on the tank, and secured by a pin 69 inserted in holes in the hook 68 and handle 6. The horizontal tube terminates in a threaded connecting piece to which is screwed a flexible hose 63 provided with a sprayer nozzle 64 having a shut-off cock 65. A dummy point 56 is screwed into the end of the shaft 2, serving as a support for the apparatus. In a modification, shown in Fig. 9, the pump and the tank are connected by a flexible hose 72, having at one end a nipple 73 fitting a plug 74, which replaces the plug 24 in the hollow piece 15, and a nipple 75 at the other end fitting a plug 76, held in position by a strap 77, to close the lower end of the tank. A second nipple 79 fitting in the plug 76 has fastened on to it a flexible hose carrying the sprayer nozzle. A needle 71 welded in the tank engages in the cross-bar 7. Liquid is forced into the tank 60 until the pressure registered by a gauge 61 reaches the required amount, the stop-cock 65 is then opened.
