Abstract
601,827. Gas-blast switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and ALLAN, A. Oct. 4, 1945, No. 25865. [Class 38 (v)] In a gas-blast circuit-breaker having two breaks in series, main arcing electrodes F<1>, F<2> are arranged in fixed relation to conductive nozzles C<3>, C<4>, and arc-initiating contact fingers G<3>, G<4> move as a unit, simultaneously producing arcs which are transferred to the nozzles and thence to an auxiliary electrode D. When opening the circuit-breaker, compressed air enters the casing at A<4>, flowing directly to a spring-biassed piston G' carrying the fingers G<3>, G<4> and indirectly to the nozzles C<3>, C<4> through spaces between insulating cylinders B<2>, B' and between cylinders B' and conductors F<3>, F<4> and through conduits C<1>, C<2> which are conductive and preferably magnetic. The gases are exhausted through a cooler, Fig. 3 (not shown). The fingers G<3>, G' are insulated at G<6> from one another and from the piston G' but are both conductively connected to a plate G<7> through contacts G<9>, thereby normally bridging the electrodes F<1>, F<2>. In Fig. 6, the arc-initiating fingers S<1>, S<2> move parallel to the axes of the main electrodes T<1>, T<2>, which are arranged in a single arcing chamber V. An arc-initiating bridging butt contact may be arranged on either side of the main electrodes, Fig. 5 (not shown). The blast gas may pass through a honeycomb and along straight arcing chambers, Fig. 7 (not shown) to reduce turbulence.
