601,610. Steam engines. ELECTROTUBESOLESMES. June 11, 1945, No. 14752. Convention date, Sept. 1, 1944. [Class 122 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXVII and XXVIII] A two-piece crank-case for a piston engine, pump or compressor of the type having opposed cylinders 1, 2, Fig. 1, has the crank-shaft 19 mounted in half-bearings 11, 13 secured to one of the crank-case sections, the plane of the independent joint 6 between the sections being off-set as required from the joint plane of the half bearings. In a modification, the bearing bolts 17, 18 are extended to pass through the crank-case sections and are provided with externally accessible nuts for clamping the crank-case sections together independently of the bearing adjustment. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the cylinders are separate from the crank-case sections. At a plane passing through the main bearings (upper half of Figure), the sections are secured together by bolts 53 and at a plane between the journals, by bolts 61 the joint plane 52 being off-set from the joint plane 51 of the half bearings 46, 49. This modification is stated to be particularly adapted to engines having a crank-case and journals made of light metal such as magnesium. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a modification applicable to an engine having cylinders arranged in a single line. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
