[Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] A hollow axle for a railway vehicle is formed with annular bulges 4 of arch-like section and to which the wheel discs 6 are welded by locally heating a tube in the region in which the bulge is required and then subjecting it to axial compression. The end 5 of the tube is then forged or pressed to form a j journal 5. The width b of the bulge should be at least 0.5#D<SP>2</SP> - d<SP>2</SP> where D and d are the outer and inner diameters of the tube. The axle may be turned smooth to remove scratches.
