Abstract

549,909. Axles for railway vehicles. STEVENS, A. H. (Pittsburgh Steel Co.). Aug. 22, 1941. No. 10750. [Class 103 (vi)] [Also in Group XXH] Hollow axles for railroad cars &c. are made by upsetting the ends of a steel tube, so as to thicken the walls by permitting the inner surfaces to contract, and then reducing the ends by forging, in order to thicken the walls further, and to form the journals and wheel seats. The tube 1, Fig. 1, is heated at the end, and is upset by means of a tool 5 having a shoulder 6, the outside of the tube being confined by dies 15, so that the walls thicken inwardly on to the tool. A tapered part 4 is thereby formed at the end of the upset portion. The tool may have portions 7, 9 of different diameters, the outer portion 9 being tapered. The tool is then withdrawn, and the journal 2, Fig. 2, and the wheel-seat 3 are formed by forging. In the upsetting operation, the tube may be heated only at two spaced points 17, 18, Fig. 5, at which the wall is thickened.
