Abstract
Composite structural material for floors, walls and the like is made from pitch or bitumen mixed with strands of vegetable fibres, particularly strands of wood, preferably 3"-20" in length, and moulded or shaped into sheets or slabs, the strands before admixture with the pitch or bitumen being treated with a wetting agent compatible with the pitch or bitumen, such as creosote, anthracene oil or light coal-tar oil. A proportion of hydrated lime or other mineral filler may be added. Preferably the composition contains about 25 per cent. by weight of strands and the amount of wetting agent employed is 10-30 per cent. by weight of the fibres. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of mineral fibres such as asbestos. Specifications 538,804 and 577,977 are referred to.
