Abstract

Unwoven fibrous material of vegetable or mineral origin is impregnated with an aqueous solution of a mixture of boric acid, sodium borate and ammonium chloride, the impregnated material mixed with a binder and the plastic mix thus obtained formed into a sheet, board, block, slab, tile or the like and dried. The fibrous materials may be straw, bark, flax shives, sawdust, peat and asbestos or mixtures of these, and vegetable fibres may be heated to 300 DEG -400 DEG C. before impregnation. The impregnating solution may contain 6 parts by weight of boric acid, 5 parts of ammonium chloride, 150 parts of water and 3 to 6 parts of sodium borate. The binder used is sodium silicate, which may be associated with aluminosilicate, sodium silicofluoride, zinc, magnesium or calcium oxide, hydroxide or chloride, cement or plaster, limestone, clay or other inorganic filler or pigment or mixtures of these substances. The product may be faced with sheet material, and reinforcing elements such as edging strips may be incorporated (see Group X). Specifications 551,658, 551,701, 557,370 and 557,371 are referred to.
