Abstract

Plastic compositions suitable for the preparation of wall-boards and other moulded articles comprise Keene's cement and sodium silicate solution, preferably of specific gravity 1.55 - 1.70. Organic fillers, treated with light oil or other water repellent to render them impervious to moisture, such as one or more of sawdust, flax fibre, hemp, cotton or paper, inorganic fillers such as glass fibre, clay, chalk, asbestos, slate, magnesium stearate or barium chloride and colouring material such as iron oxide or chromium trioxide may be incorporated. The mixture may be pressed in a mould or may be pressed or rolled to form flat slabs or tiles, with or without suitable facing papers or boards. The article formed may be waterproofed by immersing in a hot solution of wax, bitumastic, tar or phenol or urea formaldehyde, or may be given a decorative finish by coating with enamel or varnish. In an example, 15 to 30 parts by weight of Keene's cement are quickly mixed with a mixture of 5 to 15 parts of sawdust, treated with 1 to 3 parts light oil, and 60 to 73 parts of sodium silicate solution of 1.60 specific gravity, and the mass thus obtained formed to the desired shape. p
