Abstract
Moulded articles are made from a well-graded mineral aggregate mixed with asphaltic bitumen, the latter having a penetration index not above +5 and a softening point V (ring and ball) and penetration p (100g. 5 sec., 25 DEG C.) satisfying the formula V = 90 + 30 log p \sB 15. The aggregate and the bitumen may be mixed at 200-250 DEG C. and compacted under pressure in a mould to produce hollow articles such as pipes or solid moulded articles such as bricks, sheets and sleepers. The aggregate may comprise 30-60% stone, 25-50% sand and 4-25% filler to which 5-8% bitumen is added.
