Abstract
Artificial wood is produced by mixing a preferably heat hardening synthetic resin in a predetermined proportion with sawdust and then thoroughly admixing the impregnated sawdust with wood waste other than sawdust such as shavings, chippings, shruff, offcuts, bark and other residues from wood working machinery and submitting the mixture to heat and pressure to form boards and blocks. The resin may be a urea- or phenolformaldehyde resin and is preferably used in the proportion of about 5 per cent. of the weight of the final product. The mass may be veneered on one or each surface with a layer of resin impregnated sawdust or a thin section of oak, mahogany or walnut wood. Bracken or straw, or asbestos or other fire resisting fibrous material may be incorporated either in the main mass or in the veneer layer. The whole is cured at a temperature below 149 DEG C. in a press.
