Abstract

A composition for use in making building materials comprises an intimate mixture of a comminuted vegetable fibrous material impregnated with an aqueous dispersion of a soap and with a solution of a metallic salt, and Portland cement as a binder, the filler being present in an amount at least equal to twice that of the binder. The fibrous material, e.g. sawdust, wood pulp, coconut fibre or cork, is treated with an oleate or stearate of sodium or potassium in 5-10 per cent aqueous dispersion, preferably lukewarm, together, if desired, with an emulsion of an oil, e.g. paraffin oil, or a bitumen. The material is also treated with a metallic salt, e.g. ferrous or calcium chloride. Cement, preferably in dry form is then added, preferably in the proportion of 1 : 2-6 of filler. If the mixture is too wet, magnesium chloride may be added. Pigments may also be included. The mixture is then filled into greased moulds. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the use of animal and mineral fibres, and a mixture of calcium carbonate and hydrate as the mineral salt. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
