Abstract

595,891. Filters. PATERSON ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and BAILY, E. W. July 20, 1945, No. 18682. [Class 46] [Also in Group VI] In a filter in which the filtering medium consists of silicious earth, kieselguhr or like material deposited from suspension on to a pervious support, the liquid after passing through the filter bed is directed towards the base of the filter element and then passes upwardly through an inner tube before reaching the outlet. As shown in Fig. 1, a casing a with a filter head b contains a filter element comprising a fluted former k wound with wire k<SP>3</SP> as described in Specification 524,385. The liquid to be filtered enters through an opening c and after stirring up the filter material at the bottom of the casing carries it in suspension and deposits it as a coating n. The filter element has end caps k<SP>1</SP>, k<SP>2</SP>, the lower cap permitting the filtrate to enter the lower end of a central tube m which communicates with an outlet siphon tube g. Silver-coated sand m<SP>1</SP> for sterilizing the liquid may be provided between the tube m and the former k. When the flow of liquid stops most of the liquid can be siphoned out of the casing, if a valve f is opened to permit entry of atmospheric or compressed air. The valve f may be replaced by a valve which opens automatically when the flow through the filter stops. The filter head b is provided with a valve h controlling a supply of backflushing liquid or compressed air which can be used to remove the deposited bed from the wire coil k<SP>3</SP>. A valve r co-operating with a valve seat s may be provided to prevent flow of liquid through the filter if the pressure is less than that due to the head of liquid in the tube m. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the central tube is filled with silver-coated sand m<SP>1 </SP>for sterilizing the liquid. Specification 526,221 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
