Abstract

225,524. Soc. Baudrey et Bergeron. Nov. 29, 1923, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Filters having sheet filtering-materials.- Means are provided for causing a back flow of filtered liquid through the filtering medium without stopping normal filtration and without allowing the back flow liquid to mix with the filtered liquid. Liquid passes from an inlet 6 to outlet 8 through metal gauze surrounding a perforated surface 2 arranged within a casing 5. Suction nozzles 11 on tubes 12 connected to a tube 13 passing out at the end of the casing, are so arranged that when the tube system is rotated by means of a handle 16 and shaft 15 all parts of the medium are successively cleansed by back flow from the inside of the cylinder into the nozzles. The apparatus may be arranged for outward filtration through the surface 2, the nozzles being placed on the inside. An arrangement in which the nozzles are moved by a turbine and in which an automatically operated valve controls the suction is shown in Fig. 3. Nozzles 28, 30 form part of the suction passage, communication between them being normally closed by a piston valve 29. When, on account of clogging of the filter, the pressure of the unfiltered liquid communicates through an inlet 26 to the base 25 of the valve overcomes a weight 35 and the pressure of a liquid, which may be the filtered liquid, communicated through an inlet 22 to the top of the valve, the valve piston 29 is pushed upward and the suction operates on the filter. At the same time the liquid from the inlet 22 passes through orifices 39 and an outlet 23 to a turbine T from which the suction nozzles receive their rotary motion. From the turbine this liquid passes through nozzles 20, 21, a collar 27, which normally closes communication between these nozzles, being raised so that it is under pressure from this liquid on its lower surface. The valve piston moves back from the position shown to the normal when the filter is cleansed and the pressure of the unfiltered liquid is consequently reduced.
