Abstract
1,064,746. Fluid filters. J. MULLER. Oct. 15 1963 [Oct. 18, 1962], No. 40660/63. Headings BID and B1T A filter housing 1 has inlet and outlet valves (6), (7) for contaminated and filtered fluid respectively and a source (8) (Fig. 1 not shown) of compressed air which is directed through valve (10) to effect backwash of the filter elements 2, the matter thereby removed from the filters 2 passing through valve (15) into container (16) Fig. 1 shows a filtering device for gas, and during periodic cleaning of elements 2, valves (6, 7) are closed, valves (10, 15) opened. Reservoir (8) contains sufficient air to clean elements 2 in one flushing operation. Container (16) has a porous wall, retains solid matter while passing gas and has a reniforcing metal sheath (17). Fie. 2 shows filter housing 1 with filter elements 2,heated by steam coils or electric elements 45; polluted liquid enters valve 24 and filtered liquid leaves valve 25, baffles 70 assisting heavy solids to decant. Lagged tank 26 is normally full as shown so that valve 31 on float 27 closes pipe 32. To clean the filter, valves 24, 25 are closed, valves 33, 37 opened. Compressed air enters tank 26 by pipe 32 pushing the liquid back throueh elements 2, until float 27 closes orifice 29 by its valve 28. The liquid and sediment enter pot 35, containing a bag 39 in which gravity filtration occurs, a safety bv-pass 42, 43 being fitted. Pipe 32 is temporarily vented to atmosphere at 34 valve 37 closed, valves 24, 25 opened to start the filter working again. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates a filter similar to Fig. 2 except that sediment and liquid are backwashed into a cylinder (49), and then filtered by advance of a filter plate (52) under pneumatic or hydraulic pressure of jack (56). Liquid then leaves by pipe (65). When filter press disc (53) becomes clogged, compressed air is admitted by cock (67), pushing disc (53) up to stop (69) and expelling sediment into receptacle (63). Initiation of the filter cleaning operations may be automatic or manual following an audible or visible signal that pressure upstream of the filter has risen. Elements 2 are edge filters built up of grooved rings.
