Abstract
1,005,987. Filter. BOWSER Inc. Sept. 23, 1963, No. 37367. Heading BID. A flexible woven sleeve 44, supported by an internal sintered core 56, Fig. 2, is of larger cross-section than the core so that during backwashing the sleeve can expand outwardly to thereby break up a cake of filter agent formed on the sleeve. The sleeve 44 is closely woven polyethylene, the core 56, which has a starshaped cross-section, comprises sintered pellets of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene. The sleeve 44 is attached to end plates 46, 50 by drawstrings which fit grooves therein. A number of these filter elements 24 screw into plate 61, Fig. 1, in filter case 10. A precoat pot 20 contains a slurry of diatomaceous earth which is drained into chamber 22 to form a coat on the various sleeves 44 prior to beginning filtration. Thereafter liquid (e.g. water) enters inlet 12 and leaves outlet 14, flowing through the cakes of earth on sleeves 44 and up central apertures in cores 56. This flow is reversed to remove the filter agent cake, most of the pressure drop being across the sleeve 44 rather than core 56, the sleeve billowing outwards, and the contaminated cake being flushed out through inlet 12 to a sump. Gauges 16, 18 and valves 42, 40 record pressure and vent respectively chambers 22, 29.
