Abstract
1392084 Oil filter with reverse flow cleaning ATLAS AS 28 March 1972 [30 March 1971] 14471/72 Heading BID Filter elements in a housing E are periodically cleaned by reverse flow of filtered oil from a downstream reservoir K, which is vented at L during filtering to allow it to fill, valves L and G being then closed, and compressed air supplied through valve O to create a high pressure in the top of the reservoir which creates an initial high speed reverse flow when valve G is first opened, after which reverse flow continues at a lower speed but for a relatively longer period under a continuous supply of compressed air through restriction R. Filter cake and oil are displaced from around the elements (top left) into the lower part of the housing which incorporates two settling chambers P 1 and P 2 acting in parallel, and through these oil is displaced back to unfiltered oil tank A. Settled solids and water are periodically discharged at S under control of detector T. Reservoir K may be heated to 75‹C and a heater D is supplied for unfiltered oil, which removes solidified paraffin from the elements. Each element may comprise an elongate box with two pleated walls of filter cloth and an internal perforate outlet and support tube leading to manifold F. The reverse flow rates may correspond to 10 times and twice the filtration flow rate during the two cleaning stages, with pressures in similar ratios.
