Abstract

Method of backwash cleaning the filter screen of a filter pressure vessel. Liquid to be filtered enters the vessel under pressure to pass through the screen and thus reduce the vol. of air in the pocket trapped between the rising level of filtered liquid and the vessel shell. To backwash, the vessel outlet valve is closed and flow in the inlet line is reversed by connecting this line to atmospheric pressure discharge instead of liquid supply; the air pocket expands rapidly and drives filtered liquid violently back through the screen to flush screen-blocking impurities out of the discharge. Backwashing the filter screen of a pressure filter for liquids, partic. a filter for turbid water. Very simple, inexpensive and trouble free construction which can be operated with few valve adjustments. Very effective screen cleaning is achieved with only a brief interruption of the filtration process.
