Abstract

507,762. Filtering gases. MARR, P. G., and VOKES, Ltd. Dec. 18, 1937, No. 35138. [Class 8 (ii)] [Also in Group I] A filtering element is formed of flexible material with radial folds or pleats and with other folds transverse thereto. As shown in Fig. 1, filtering-material 1 clamped at its inner margin between a nut 15 and a stepped baseplate 11, is pleated vertically and folded round the upper edge of a tubular member 18, and has its outer pressure margin clamped between a cylinder 19 and a washer 20 of yielding material on the plate 11. The edges of the members 18, 19 may be formed with recesses or projections to define the position of the pleats. The element is held in position by a wing nut 17 on a central tube 8, through which the fluid to be filtered passes from an inlet 6 to apertures 25 and the space in the casing 4 below the element. After filtering upwards through the element, the fluid passes away through an outlet 7. Fig. 2 shows apparatus intended especially for the filtration of air. The filtering-material 40 is folded round the upper edge of a member. 50 and the lower edge of a perforated member 51 and clamped at the outer margin between a cover 35 and a member 38, the base of which is apertured to admit the air to be filtered. The parts are held together by a central stem 32 and nests 49, 55 thereon. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement in which the inner edge of the filtering material 64 is attached to a short tube 68 which can be moved longitudinally, after the material has been fixed in position, to release the tension on the material.
