Abstract

764,570. Filters. FRAM CORPORATION. Feb. 14, 1955 [March 10, 1954], No. 4310/55. Class 46. [Also in Group XXXIV] Oil to be filtered enters at 18 a recess 19 in a casting 17 closed by an apertured plate 20, and passes through an aperture 21 in the latter to the outside of a part-flow filter element 37. Some of it passes through a longitudinally-pleated paper annulus 38 and a corrugated perforated core 42 but is prevented from passing through perforations 32 in a centre tube 13 by an imperforate tube 50. It passes instead through holes 45 in a centering ring 44 and then through grommets 46 to a hole 29 in a nut 25 and a hole 30 in the casting 17 to the crankcase. The remainder of the oil flows through a by-pass valve 35 into the centre tube 13 and thence through passage 31 to the bearings. The partflow cartridge may be replaced by a full-flow cartridge (not shown) which is not provided with either the imperforate tube 50 or the grommets 46, and its centering rings 44 are imperforate. Also the paper of which it is composed has a much greater porosity. Flow is then radially inwards direct to the centre tube 13 and along passage 31 to the bearings. The valve 35 serves in this case as an excess pressure relief valve.
