Abstract

1413497 Filters MARVEL ENG CO 30 Nov 1972 55322/72 Heading BID A suction filter assembly for reservoirs (one embodiment of which is shown) comprises an imperforate shroud 26 positioned around a filter element 14, the shroud 26 and filter element 14 being carried within housing 3 by removable cover 21. The cover 21 also carries a by-pass valve 30 which sits in the end of filter element 14 when liquid is being filtered. The filter element 14 is a snap fit on sleeve 18 and sealingly engages boss 13b of end portion 12. Boss 13b is covered with screen 46. The housing 3 comprises imperforate portion 7 and perforated cylinder 10. The portion 7 and cylinder 10 may be secured together by welding or by a ring (e.g. of spring steel) having projections which extend into aligned holes in overlapping portions of cylinder 10 and portion 7. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the portion 7 is longer than cylinder 10 and is modified to provide an annular chamber around cylinder 10. When the filter element 14 is mounted on the housing 3 air is purged from shroud 26 through spring loaded valve 42. In Fig. 8 (not shown) valve 42 is mounted in cover 21. The element 14 may comprise paper and/or metal mesh layers on perforated metal core 14a. In use the assembly is mounted by welding or bolting housing 3 to the top wall of the reservoir and fitting 4 is connected to a suction source. If the filter element becomes clogged by-pass valve 30 is opened, the opening of which is indicated by means 33.
