Abstract

860,871. Filters. PRECISION MECANIQUE. June 14, 1957 [June 16, 1956 ; May 29, 1957], No. 18896/57. Class 46. [Also in Group XXVIII] Apparatus for filtering under full flow conditions a fluid flowing in a closed circuit comprises an annular filtering element 5 with comparatively large pore such as a woven nylon " horse hair " canvas of 200 mesh, and an annular clarifying element 6 such as a filter paper with very fine pores, mounted in coaxial superposition in a fluidtight casing 1 provided with an inlet 2 and outlet 3 for the fluid, two parallel streams of fluid flowing between the inlet and outlet, through the corresponding element inwards to central bores or recesses therein and that through the filtering element 5 flowing along a passageway 12 having a reduced cross-section adapted to produce across the element a predetermined loss of head. As shown in Fig. 1, the passageway 12 is bounded by a central tube 11 leading from the clarifying element ; the tube may be of frusto-conical form to reduce further the pressure at the outlet side of the clarifying element. As applied to the lubricating oil system of a motor car engine a casting 13, Fig. 4, secured to the crank case carries a casing 15 and provides an outlet 20 from the filtering and clarifying elements 22,23,leading to an outlet passage 18 housing a by-pass valve 31. A close-coiled spring 28 restricts the passage 30 from the filtering element 22, normal flow opening out the coils to permit increased flow and a reduced loss of pressure head across the element. The flow from the clarifying element 23 passes through a port 29 in the mounting of the coil spring 28. A flange 23a on the upper end of the clarifying element 23 substantially divides the casing 15 into upper and lower parts, the flow in the upper one being turbulent to dislodge the particles of carbon black, tars, resins &c. from the filtering element 22, these particles dropping into a carbon zone below the flange 23a and opposite the clarifying element 23 and being finally removable through a drain plug 26. The elements may be mounted on a perforated tube between end plates to form a replacement unit and be adhesively secured to an intermediate dividing plate which provides a flange functioning like the flange 23a.
