Abstract
764,578. Filters. BERLINE, R. Feb. 16, 1955 [Feb. 18, 1954], No.4623/55. Class 46. In a filter of the kind in which filtration flow is from inside to outside the element and cleaning is by back-flushing, a reserve supply of filtered liquid under pressure is provided, inter alia to maintain filtrate output during backflushing, and in addition the admission of liquid to be filtered and discharge of sludge from the wall of the filter element are controlled by electromagnetically-operated valves. Liquid to be filtered is admitted through an electromagnetically-controlled valve 7 to the inside of a filter element 1 and the filtrate is kept under pressure either by partially closing a valve 12 on the outlet pipe 11 or by connecting the latter with a tank (not shown) under liquid or air pressure, so that a vessel 3 also contains filtered liquid under pressure and, by closing a vent 5, air under pressure. At predetermined intervals time-relay 9 closes the valve 7 and opens another valve 8 communicating with a drain 14 so that back-flushing and drainage of sludge occur while at the same time normal filtrate flow is maintained. The duration and frequency of back-flushing are governed by a dash-pot 10 and by the time-relay 9, respectively.
