Abstract
587,721. Filters. HEYWOOD, R. B. Sept. 12, 1944, No. 17422. [Class 46] In a lubricating system of the kind in which oil is circulated by a pressure pump through a filter, an outlet leads from the inlet side of the filter to a settling tank so that in addition to the oil flow through the filter, there is a by-passed flow of oil over the surface of the filter to sweep the sludge therefrom. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, oil from an engine 2 is passed by a pump 1 into a storage tank 3 from which it is withdrawn by a pump 4 and fed to a filter 5. Some of the oil passes through the filter and to the engine 2, but a certain amount sweeps over and cleans the outer surface of the filter medium 6, and with the dislodged sludge is returned by a pipe 10 to a part 12 of the tank 3. The settled sludge is removed through an outlet 13. The filter comprises a cylindrical cloth medium and a helical baffle is fitted round the cloth extending from the inlet 8 to the outlet 10. The storage tank may be a tank for de-aerating the oil by means of screens, as described in Specification 559,233, [Group XXXIV], the by-pass outlet from the filter being connected to the outlet side of one or more of the screens. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the filter is located within a sludge tank 25 and the oil is fed to the filter through an inlet 23. Some of the oil flows through the annular space surrounding the filter medium 22 and sweeps the sludge through an outlet 24 into the tank 25. The clean oil on top of the settled sludge passes out through an opening 26 and mingles with filtered oil at the outlet 27.
