Abstract

595,655. Conduits for pipes &c. STORY, J. G., and CLARK, J. S. July 4, 1945, No. 17092. [Class 99 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A conduit for use in building construction for accommodating electric supply leads, or gas or water pipes and adapted to replace fixtures such as skirting boards, dados, picture rails &c. comprises a member having one or more pipereceiving channels 12 and one or more webs or flanges 8 provided with or defining elongated slots 11 which receive bolts 17 or other fastenings for securing a cover 2. In Fig. 1 two parallel channels 3, 4 are separated by a slotted web portion and the cover plate 2 has folded flanges 15 engaging over the outer channel walls 6. The bolts 17 co-act with nuts 16 which are retained behind the web 8 by longitudinal beads 10. The bases of the channels are apertured to receive screws for securing the channel member to a structure. The channel member and cover plate may include angles or bends according to structural requirements. A lapping member 19 may be employed to conceal joints in the cover plates. Spring metal strips are provided to retain the service lines in these channels. A modification, Fig. 6, includes a broad channel 25 suitable for receiving electric power and lighting leads and two narrow channels 26, 27 to receive loud speaker leads and telephone and/or low pressure bell leads respectively. The webs 34, 35 separating the channels are slotted to receive the securing bolts of cover plates 41. Weldedon strips 51, 56 locate the spring retaining-clips 52, 57. In this form the cover plate and the lap plate 50 may be flared outwardly at the lower edge so that the assembly may be used in place of the conventional skirting board. In another modification, Fig. 15 the device comprises a backing plate 63 secured to the structure and the channels 66, 68 are constituted by separate sheet metal members spot-welded to the backing plate. The channels are of undercut form, Fig. 17. The cover plate 62, is secured by catches coacting with the slots 74. These catches comprise studs, Fig. 22, formed with collars 82 which fit apertures in the cover plates. Squared portions 79 of the studs receive rectangular plate members 83 which have turned back ends 85 and are backed by spring washers 86 retained by a C washer 87. The catches are assembled in the cover plate with the plates 85 located so that they will pass between the sides of slot 74. The studs are then rotated through 90 degrees so that the bent ends of the plates engage behind the lips 72, the plates being thus cammed rearwardly to compress the springs 86. Spring clips 91, are provided to hold the service lines in the channels 66, 68 and other clips 94, are used as retainers for the channel 67.
