Abstract

594,699. Anodic surface treatment of zinc. STARECK, J. E., CORLISS, L. M., and UNITED CHROMIUM, Inc. Aug. 31, 1944, No. 16578. [Class 41] Surface conversion coatings are produced on zinc by anodic treatment, using current of 2-50 amps. per sq. ft. from an external source, in an aqueous bath containing a soluble chromate and an auxiliary acid radical selected from the group sulphate, selenate and fluoride (simple or complex) radicals, also having an alkali metal content to adjust the pH to 2-7. The proportion by weight of hexavalent chromium to sulphate radicals when employed is to lie within the range 10 : 1 and 30 : 1, the corresponding ranges in respect of the other auxiliary acid radicals being on the basis that 5 parts by weight of fluoride radical or 2 parts of silicofluoride radical or 1 part of selenate radial is equivalent to 1 parts of sulphate radical. The optimum proportion range with sulphate as the auxiliary radical is 15: 1 to 20: 1 with pH 3-4.5. The bath may be at room temperature. Chromic acid may be added from time to time to regulate the pH. The auxiliary acid radical may be introduced in the form of a sparingly soluble salt in excess, e.g. calcium or strontium sulphate or sodium silico-fluoride. An acetate or a chromium salt may be added as a buffer. A jet-black colour is obtained in baths of the sulphate radical type and yellow in baths of the fluoride type, similar colours being obtained on zinc-base diecastings of good quality. A steel cathode may be employed. The coating consists of zinc chromate with a small amount of zinc oxide.
