Abstract
771,925. Electrodeposition of chromium. METAL & THERMIT CORPORATION. April 28, 1954 [May 20, 1953], No. 12351/54. Class 41. A crack-free layer of chromium is deposited on a metal article at a current density of 0.5 to 8 amps/sq. in. from an aqueous bath at a temperature of 140 F. to the bath boiling point comprising per litre 200 to 900 gms. CrO 3 , strontium sulphate and sodium or potassium silicofluoride in excess of their bath solubility, a soluble non-catalytic strontium compound and a non-catalytic compound of the same metal as the silicofluoride to suppress the concentration of the dissolved. alkali metal silicofluoride so that the sum of dissolved sulphate and silicofluoride varies with .Cr0 3 concentration as shown in the area A, B, C, D of the graph. Preferably the sulphate concentration is between 0.3 and 5.5 gms/litre and the silicofluoride concentration is between. 1.0 and 11.4 gms./litre, and the preferred operating range is within the area J, K, L, M at a bath temperature of 145 to 155 F. When the bath is used at conditions specified by values above the line G, H, the concentration of silicofluoride should exceed that of sulphate, while for values below the line E, F, the reverse condition applies. Suitable non-catalytic compounds are the carbonates, chromates, and hydroxides of strontium, sodium, and potassium, strontium oxide, and sodium and potassium bichromates. Specifications 697,786 and 711,468 are referred to.
