Abstract
594,153. Two-stroke engines. BIRD, J. T. March 23, 1945, No. 7424. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] In a double-acting two-stroke engine in which each cylinder has three pistons reciprocating therein, a double-crown piston is connected to the crankshaft by a gudgeon pin G' having flats where it passes through slots in L-sectioned tie rods J, connecting together single-crown pistons E<1>, E<2>. The piston D controls the main inlet ports and has crowns, Fig. 2, provided with passages H, which communicate with additional ports. The piston crowns may be screwed on to the pistons, and the piston E<2> may have a slipper extension F provided with lubricant ports. Annular flanges on the piston crowns restrict the combustion chambers to spherical or lentilshaped spaces C, a passage C' being left to accommodate the igniter or liquid fuel injection device. The crank-ease has an opening at the right-hand side, Fig. 8, for the passage of the crankshaft which has a flange Q for driving engine auxiliaries. Lubricant is fed through channels L.
