[Class 80(i)] [Also in Groups XXVII and XXXIV] A combined power transmission mechanism and oil pump for internal combustion engines comprises a pinion 5, fixed to shaft 1 and meshing a pinion 4 keyed on a shaft 3 fixed to a connecting rod 2. The pinions 4, 5 are enclosed by a casing 6, so that as the piston 11 reciprocates, the pinion 4 drives shaft 1. The latter may carry a flywheel 9. The casing 6, with the pinions 4, 5, act as an oil pump. Oil from supply 15 is fed into a bore 13 in shaft 1 and passes through radial ducts in the pinions 4, 5 and through passages 16, 17 in the rod 2 to the gudgeon pin. Lateral orifices 18 may be provided to lubricate the walls of the cylinder. A non-return valve is fitted in the supply pipe 15 to prevent oil from being pumped back to the source of supply during each alternate half revolution of the shaft 1.
