Abstract

A coloured surface film composed of hydrated oxides of the elements in chromium-containing alloy steel is formed on stainless steel printing-plates grained by electrolytic etching, by immersing the plates in the etching-bath without the use of current. The alloy may contain chromium in substantial quantities, say over 5 per cent or 6 per cent by weight, and preferably contains 18 per cent of chromium and 8 per cent of nickel. The bath comprises water, sulphuric acid and sodium bichromate in stated proportions; the bichromate may be replaced by chromates, dichromates, chromic acid, vanadic acid, metavanadic acid, vanadates or metavanadates of ammonium, potassium or sodium, or manganates or permanganates of alkaline metals of Group I or of alkaline earth metals of Group II. A further specific example comprises sulphuric acid, chromic, vanadic, metavanadic, manganic or permanganic acid and sulphates or bisulphates.
