Abstract

[Class 80(ii)] In a variable-speed gearbox a dog clutch h, i between a pinion f slidable on a shaft a and another pinion b rotatable on the shaft includes a sliding sleeve g arranged between and splined to both the pinion f and shaft a. Prior to the engagement of the clutch as shown in Fig. 1 the sleeve g is locked to the pinion f by a ball u, engaging in a hole t in the sleeve and a recess v in the pinion bore, but on continued movement of the sleeve to the left, by a fork engaging the groove w, a friction ring j engages a surface k on the pinion b and the ball u is forced out of the recess v against a spring-loaded plunger p to allow the sleeve to move and engage the dogs h, i as shown in Fig. 2. During this operation the friction ring is additionally loaded by balls n riding out of recesses against springs m, and the end of plunger p which passes through a slot r in the sleeve locks behind a shoulder s in the bore of pinion f. On movement of the sleeve g to the right to disengage the clutch and engage the pinion f with a pinion c on another shaft e, movement of the pinion f is prevented by the plunger p until the dogs h, i are disengaged, the friction clutch j, k released, and the ball u moved by the spring plunger into the recess v in the sleeve. Thus the connection between the pinion f and pinion b is completely broken before the pinion f can be moved with the sleeve to engage the other pinion c.
