Abstract

592,248. Discharge lamps. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd., and STEPHENS, G. O. March 17, 1945, Nos. 6775 and 10709. [Class 39 (i)] A fluorescent lamp 1 has an ignition strip 8 on the exterior of the envelope, consisting of a deposit of conducting material such as comminuted metal or carbonaceous material, which is not connected to either electrode, but is earthed. The envelope may be previously roughened by sand blasting or etching or may be grooved. Suitable metals are aluminium, zinc, tin, or copper and a binder such as nitro-cellulose, amyl or cellulose acetate may be used or the metal may be sprayed directly through a suitable templet. A cement such as sodium silicate may be applied to the envelope before spraying. The strip may terminate in bands round the envelope as indicated at 9 or by bands overlapping the metal shells of the contact caps as at 10 or the strip may end on these shells. When the strip is not connected to the shells of the caps it may be earthed through a spring member attached to the lamp socket or to the fitting housing the socket. The circuit includes an autotransformer to start the discharge when the electrodes have reached a predetermined temperature. The filling is argon or neon at a pressure of 2 to 6 mms. mercury..
