Abstract
591,830. Universal joints. HAMILL, W. W. Feb. 13, 1945, No. 3552. [Class 80(ii)] In a flexible shaft coupling having a rubber or like connecting piece bonded to two parts of rigid material in mutually right-angled pin connection with the respective shaft ends, either or both of the pins bear in slotted holes to allow axial play in the coupling. As shown, metal or synthetic plastic sleeves 1, 2 encircling shaft ends 3, 4 have flat-sided pins 7, 8 drivingly engaging open slots in the shaft ends, the sleeves being supported at their outer ends on the shafts through rounded lips 12. The rubber connecting piece 14-has an external diameter appreciably larger than the sleeve diameter, and possesses a central aperture 15 which may vary in size from the full shaft diameter down to a small hole as shown, in which case it may act as a connecting passage between two sealed damping chambers formed by the sleeve portions. The lips 12 may be replaced by self-aligning ball-bearings or, alternatively, may be placed opposite the driving pins. In a modification the sleeves are a close fit on the shaft ends throughout their mutual overlap.
