Abstract

Universal joints.-A universal joint for two shafts comprises slotted arms on one shaft, the slots engaging arms mounted on the other shaft, which arms are capable of rocking or sliding upon their shaft in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the slots. The effect of this is to allow one of the shafts to rock about a point external to the coupling, such as the point 3, Fig. 1, in which 9 indicates the slotted arms fixed to one shaft and 8 the arms capable of rocking about an axis 6 on the other shaft. Spherical rollers 11 are provided but may be omitted if desired. Fig. 5 shows a form in which arms 17 are capable of sliding across the shaft 1 and carry rollers 18 of the form shown in Fig. 6, or spherical rollers instead. In a modification of the device shown in Fig. 1, the arms 8 are slotted parallel to the shaft, while spherical rollers are carried on the arms 9.
